Built by the Chandela Dynasty in a short span of 100 years from 950 - 1050 AD the Temples of Khajuraho display different aspects of life. Carved Temples : These temples with outstanding sculptures embellished in stone were built during the reign of the Chandela dynasty. The temples of Khajuraho are dedicated to Gods and goddesses like Shiva, Jagadamba and Vishnu. They are separated into three directional groups: Western, eastern and southern.
The most famous are the group in the west which are also the most typical of the Khajuraho temples. The main temple is the Kandariya Mahadeo here. The Chaunsat Yogini is the oldest surviving shrine. The eastern group consists mainly of Jain and Hindu temples.
Indo - Aryan architecture : These temples from the 10th century form a closed architectural unit with outstanding sculptural art and architecture. These temples are known to the outside world only for their erotic sculptures.
